Frank Ocean Reveals He’s Gay…

Just last week R&B singer, Frank Ocean, from the rap group Odd Future, revealed a very personal piece of himself to the entire world… he’s homosexual. Although instead of a public statement, on July 4th he wrote on his Tumblr page of a very personal and precious time in his life four years ago when he first fell in love. He wrote, “Four summers ago, I met somebody. I was 19 years old. He was too.”

“We spent that summer, and the summer after, together. Everyday almost. And on the days we were together, time would glide. Most of the day I’d see him, and his smile.”

“Sleep I would often share with him. By the time I realized I was in love, it was malignant. It was hopeless. There was no escaping, no negotiating to the women I had been with, the ones I cared for and thought I was in love with.”

He added, “I don’t have any secrets I need kept anymore … I feel like a free man.”

Frank’s Odd Future band mate Tyler the Creator tweeted after Frank posted the message, writing, “My Big Brother Finally F***ing Did That. Proud Of That N***a Cause I Know That Shit Is Difficult Or Whatever.”

We all know Frank Ocean isn’t the one only one in Hip Hop that is homosexual, although it does make him the first to publicly reveal his sexual attraction to men and for that I respect him to the fullest. He’s an inspiration to everyone.

I have TONS of friends, best friends who are gay, some who I’ve grown up with and some who I’ve just acquainted with, but that doesn’t change an ounce of their beautiful soul. What people fail to realize is that coming out is a process, a process in which knowing one-self and becoming truthful and accepting is critical. Only that person will know when they are ready. But don’t we all at one point in our lives, find ourselves in this great big world? I know I did.

Hip Hop is changing. The world is changing. Being gay will never discredit or decrease one’s true passion and talent in Hip Hop culture, nor any culture for that matter. Gaga said it best. “No matter gay, straight or bi, let’s live a transgender life. I’m on the right track, baby I was born to survive.”
